Year-Round In-Person Positions
Voyage Guides
Voyage Guides are the core professional staff aboard Shenandoah who live and work in a close-knit community. Guides are directly responsible for student and passenger safety, learning, and overall experience. The role requires mentoring youth, hosting adult charter guests, standing night watch, and sailing and maintaining a wooden vessel. The work is physically demanding, highly collaborative, and deeply rewarding for those who thrive in a dynamic, mission-driven environment where no two days are the same.
Bosun
The Bosun is a competent mariner who takes responsibility and ownership of the vessel’s maintenance. The Bosun must be able to lead other Voyage Guides through rigging and work projects while also demonstrating a strong ability to work with youth. Prior sailing, leadership, carpentry, and rigging experience are preferred, though not necessary to apply.
First Mate
As the second in command of Shenandoah, the First Mate must demonstrate sound judgment and decision-making skills throughout her employment with Ocean Academy. The ability to role model is vital. The Mate must balance competence and authority while showing humility and a desire to learn. Leadership, facilitation, and sailing skills are required.
Chef
Ocean Academy seeks an organized, enthusiastic, and full-time chef to plan, prepare, and execute meals for up to 40 people. The chef will live aboard Shenandoah, working with a team of 9 staff. With the help of an assistant, they will prepare three meals/day, 5 days/week. Generous salary and a paid week off included. Must love adventure.
